BBC Top Gear in Les Arcs

Some TV watching gymnastics will be required for Sunday evening (29th June 2008) when BBC Top Gear in Les Arcs goes up against Spain vs Germany in Euro 2008. BBC2, 8:00pm - 9:00pm Richard Hammond will race Speed Flyers François Bon and Antoine Montant from Arc 1950 to Villaroger.

Hammond is in a Audi RS6 Estate and to get from 1950 to Villaroger needs to come down to Bourg Saint Maurice at the bottom of the valley before heading on up the Tignes road to Villaroger. The Speed Flyers on skis and parapenting have a much more direct route.

November Snowsports in Scotland

According to their crappy web site, the Cairngorm Mountain intends to open this weekend for limited snowsports. Their plan is to open on both Saturday and Sunday (24th/25th Nov.) from 0930 to 1530 subject to wind speeds and weather. They will then close again to continue with the scheduled maintenance.

Les Arcs

Les Arcs is one of the French mega-resorts located above the town of Bourg Saint-Maurice in the Savoie region of France. The Les Arcs ski area (not including linked La Plagne) includes 106 runs, 54 lifts and 200 kilometres of descent. Les Arcs is made up of several villages; Arc 1600 (aka Arc Pierre Blanche), Arc 1800, Intrawest's new Arc 1950 and Arc 2000.

Recently linked with La Plagne via the Vanoise Express cable car, the Paradiski domain now boasts 425km of skiing and boarding.

Arc 1600

Arc 1600 is a pretty compact little 60's style village whose main attraction is probably that it is the top station for the funicular railway which runs up and down the mountain to the town of Bourg Saint-Maurice.

Snowboarding in Chile

The three resorts of El Colorado, Valle Nevado and La Parva are (sometimes!) linked, you can buy a pass for all three. We mostly spent our time at El Colorado, there's lots of lovely off-piste, and a few fun black runs as well as plenty of reds and blues. There are no trees to crash into (you're more likely to find cacti), and you get an amazing view of Santiago from the slopes! Beware of altitude sickness on the way up, its an extremely steep and windy road (don't eat your lunch just before going!!)

Prices for hotels, lift passes etc are about the same as in France, equipment rental is a bit cheaper. You can find second hand shops in Santiago selling all the clothes and if you're lucky you might find some second hand boots in your size.
