Mountain Bike Trail

Moray Monster Trails: Ordiequish

Trails start at the Ordiequish car park, just outside Fochabers on the back road to Boat o' Brig. To get there turn right at the chip shop / museum / sign for Police and WC if coming from Elgin (the West) and drive out of the town. Half a mile on on the left there is a car park which is signposted with Moray Monster Trails and Forestry Commission Ordiequish.

Bike Trails Officially Opened in North of Scotland

The last few weeks has seen bikers in the North and North East of Scotland welcome the official openings of mountain bike trails on the Black Isle and at Fochabers.

On the 25th of March the Learnie Red Rock Trails were officially opened. The trails were brought about through discussions started around 2000 between the Highland Mountain Biking Association and the Forestry Commission. Some £200,000 of investment from Ross & Cromarty Enterprise, Scottish National Hertitage, The Highland Council and Highlands & Islands Partnership Programme (Europe) together with the efforts of association members has culminated in this challenging network of trails for riders of all abilities.

Red Bull Project Downhill: Innerleithen

Only six miles from Glentress lies the village of Innerleithen. Famous for its Red Bull Project Downhill course, Innerleithen also boasts the 19.4km Traquair cross country trail - part of the Forestry Commission 7 Stanes network. Pick up a trail map somewhere before you head onto the hill, individual sections are well signposted but it is difficult to gain a coherent overview when you are in the thick of it. There are eleven Red Bull Project Downhill segments; here is how they describe them...

Name Length Grade Description
39 Steps 460m Black Very steep. Rutted with tight turns, exposed roots and drops, leading onto fast trail with bus stops before dropping onto the fire road.
Drop Zone 400m Black Starts wide and fast with jumps, leads into a rock garden & then tight technical descent before spitting you out across the motorway run.
Arena 221m Red Final complex for all trails. Rough and rooty, then watch out for the bombhole before finally cranking into the berms.
Tunnel 185m Blue Fast trail with step downs that can be rolled. The gradienty is easy - some spinning required.
Chute 229m Red Non-technical but very fast if you can stay off the brakes. Steep with sharp turns!
New Luge 350m Blue Freeride! - Bermsville Arizona - fast and smooth with tight bermed turns, easy jumps and a moderate gradient. Ideal for beginners.
Technical Nightmare 245m Red This section is very tight and twisty, though with a moderate gradient - watch out for roots.
The Deer Hunter 300m Red Follows an old deer trail and is technical but fast. Links with another brick in the wall.
Another Brick in the Wall 285m Red This section crosses over broken dry stone dykes and is technical. Steep in places.
Magic Carpet 305m Blue Freeride - an easy to moderate gradient section that presents a couple of exciting options to finish with.
Quarry Wall 85m Red Steep 'drop in' leading towards a gap jump across the fireroad. Go for it!

Other than a few portable toilets (two of which look like they have experienced some of the bumpier parts of the downhill), there are no facilities to speak of here. Loads of car / van parking is available - no pay and display. Food and what not is available at the Hub at Glentress or at local establishments in Innerleithen or Peebles. Standing on the road edge at some points you have amazing uninterrupted view over the village and down the tweed valley due to the steep drop off.

Another trip to 'tress

Another trip to the 'tress yesterday, this time with Pgibby. Forecast didn't predict the rain and sleety type stuff which came, but it didn't either predict the sunshine breaking through at time. Got Super Muddy. Really need to get eye wear. Mud-eyes saw me collapse in a heap at one point. Great cure for a hangover though. Or rather great cure for pgibby's hangover cure - tons of cheese mixed with baked beans on toast ;)

Weekend mountain biking sucks a little though because there are too many people clogging up the wee cafe. More mid-week adventures are called for.

Visited Learnie Red Rock Mtb trails today

I had the opportunity to visit Learnie Red Rock trails today for the first time - was a lot of fun.

From the car park the waymarked cycle up to the top of the red graded fun park was windy uphill singletrack - a little like hard work for an only very recently reformed smoker! Came down the red, slowly to check out the features. Lots of double humps, good big berms to throw yourself into.

After the fun park we climbed back up and over the top of the hill. The black downhill was closed for renovations; had a little wander there just to see what it holds. We embarked instead on the black on the other side of the back valley. Conditions were ok. It had been raining a little earlier in the day and many of the stone features were too intimidating for me. The end of the trail is a bit annoying, uphill - and with an uphill northshore elevated log trail. Just after that the trail ends with steepish stone stairs down to the road.

Learnie Red Rock

A £150,000 facelift has been revealed at Learnie Forest on the Black Isle. The network of more than 28kms of blue, red and black trails has been relaunched under the name Learnie Red Rock Trails. The cash boost has enabled the Forestry Commission to revamp exisiting trails, orignally built by local bikers, and build new ones designed by Paul Masson of Cycletherapy. He also designed the Laggan Wolftrax mtb trails. Dirt jumps and a northshore section have been built at the car park. Riders are then faced with a choice of trails ranging from meandering loops for the less experienced to some great downhill and technically challenging black runs.

Moray Monster Trails: Whiteash

Basically there is the single track "Whiteash Loopie" graded Red with a bit of black graded north shore at the top. From the car park on the Buckie-Fochabers road you need to climb up to the monument, around 50 metres down from there the trail starts.

The trails have recently been upgraded as part of the Moray Monster Trails project. This page needs to be updated!
