Laggan WolftraxSet in the outstanding natural highland beauty of Strathmashie Forest at Laggan Bridge, Newtonmore, Wolftrax provides the thrills of a big-and-bermy blue grade Fun Park, a fast red grade route packed with features and a very technical ‘double diamond’ black grade route for serious mountain bike enthusiasts. Cycle all the trails and you will have enjoyed nearly 18 km of the most up-to-date, year-round singletrack available in the country. The 'Basecamp' facilities are fine. In fact they are great, let down only by the toilets which are a bit dark and the last few times I was there the shower was out of commission. But who needs to shower? The cafe serves good quality coffee, bacon rolls, paninis and has cakes and what not. Friendly people and very conveniently, I have discovered, they have stingy stuff and plasters... The bike shop is small but stocks essentials that you might need, plus some non essentials that you might really really want. They run an uplift service every half hour or so to the top of the blue run. From there it is a little further to the red and black start points, or you can just keep re-living the blue because it is so much fun. It is, I think, two quid per uplift or fifteen pounds / day with unlimited journeys back up the hill. There are facilities at the basecamp to wash your bike with a pressure hose. If it is a nice day (and even then you have to be hardy) there is a river about 1km from the Laggan Wolftrax car park (turn left). It has its own car park, tiny beach and waterfall action - go for a swim and 'invigorate' yourself before the journey home. I've forgotten what it's called - post a comment if you know... Location
