Beautiful horseshoe shaped bay situated between Arbroath and Montrose on the coast road which picks up swell in any direction from North to South. Amazing at sunset when the reddish sand and the elevated Red Castle look stunning. Cliffs and dunes frame the bay and the river mouth of the lunan water. Fairly recently a car park has been added by the dunes.
Three key spots; good lefts off the point at the North - beware rips on big days. Shifty lefts and rights in the middle. Often messy waves at the South end of the bay.
If you come across anything that looks like it might be a World War II bomb, then it probably is. Some 600 have been found at Lunan Bay and their presence is consistent with the Bay having been used as a practise bombing range. Urm, don't touch and call the cops or someone.
