The evolution of the snowboard has spanned more than 4 decades from the humble beginnings of the "Snurfer" invented in 1965. Since that Christmas Morning when Sherman Poppen crafted a surfboard for use on snow from two pairs of skis, millions of boards have been made and a fully fledged snowboard industry has sprung up.
Snowboards are manufactured with three variables guiding their design; terrain preference, rider foot size and weight. The terrain preference influences the outline of the board, foot size guides the width of the board and the weight of the snowboarder influences the length and flex of the snowbaord.
Types of Snowboards
There are three principal types of snowboard named for the type of snowboarding being practised; Freeride / All Mountain, Freestyle and Alpine.
